Friend owns a 1997 For Explorer, had a 4.0L in it (trying to verify OHV or SOHC). Before she bought it though a 5.0L engine was swapped into it.

The speedometer does not work.

I've read the thread about a Ranger swap and was wondering if it's the same things that need to be installed/wired?

td;dr what are some things to look at?

I've just looked at a couple of wiring diagrams for the speedometer in the truck with a V6 installed.

The speedometer gets its signal from the Vehicle Speed Sensor on the differential. That sensor is also used by the cruise control. Does the truck have cruise and does it work?

But the speedometer also gets a signal from the Powertrain Control Module which I imagine would have had to be replaced going from a V6 to a V8. That might be the root cause of your problem.
