I like the way this post is going. It goes to show all the knowledge that floats around this site. Me myself i learned my skills from a retired army welder back when i worked for freightliner. And did custom cab conversions. We would do everything from taking the cab off replacing it with a smaller one and then moving the axles forward and shortening the frame. Alot of welding done.

my buddy who does tons of fab work uses an acelyn torch to preheat the cast metal till it is almost glowing then welds a short 1/2" bead or so to it. Keeps warping down and gets good penetration tot he cast.
