Squeaking / Squealing Brakes

Haven't had a need to change the brakes yet, but did you make sure the shims and all metal surfaces were greased? I haven't looked at them to know but my old car had shims, etc. that needed lubrication or you would get squeaks

It was done at a garage, so I don't know. I would assume they knew what they were doing.

For your info harlenm, my neighbour has a 2011 Escape and he has a squeaking problem with the brakes as well. They have tried to fix it but without success. Also one of the service advisors at my dealership has an Escape with the same problem.

Peter,

Have you recommended that he call the Ford of Canada CRC @ 1-800-565-3673? They’ll lend a hand to get the noise taken care of.

Thanks for offering your suggestion, phareous.

Has the squeaking improved/worsened since you last checked in, harlenm? I appreciate you keeping us in the loop.

He has had two dealers try and fix it without success. Even the Ford service advisor has had them try and fix his own without any luck and is just running around with it as it is now.

Not really. Its fine sometimes and bad others.

I noticed there is a TSB for "front brakes - intermittent squeal" - tsb 11-10-29. I assume you've already tried that but just posting it here for future reference. It applies to 2011-2012 Explorer and says for some vehicles built between 8/10/2010 and 8/2/2011. It involves resurfacing or replacing the front discs, cleaning the caliper anchor plate, bracket, and bolts, and replacing the pads. It also dictates applying the grease properly.

The tsb was rear brakes. Is there another one for front? I've been told the tsb only applies if you have less than 12,000 miles.

I've heard that as well about the 12,000 miles. Not sure if the following applies to your Ex.

11-10-29 FRONT BRAKES - INTERMITTENT SQUEAL

ISSUE:
Some 2011-2012 MKS, Flex, Taurus, MKT and Explorer vehicles built between 8/10/2010 and 08/02/2011 and some 2011-2012 Taurus SHO not equipped with the Performance Package built between 8/10/2010 and 8/02/2011 may exhibit a low frequency squeal from the front brakes.

Peter,

How long ago has it been since he’s been to the dealer to fix it? Could you please check on whether he’s comfortable signing up and sending me his contact info?

Not really. Its fine sometimes and bad others.
harlenm,

I made sure your escalation is still open and you have a follow-up call scheduled.

Brakes Squeek

I have about 4300 miles on my 2013 limited explorer, and the brakes squeek. the sound isnt extremely obnoxious, but its at the point that I feel a brand new car like this shouldnt have brakes that squeek. I took it to the dealer for my oil change and asked them about it, and all i was told is that there is metallic in the brake pads...so what i took from that is, everyones brakes should squeek. didnt seem right to me, anyone else have this problem if so, what did you do?

Metallic pads WILL contribute more to noise than older compositions, but I've actually heard that the way you break in your new brake pads can contribute to brake noise. do a google search for brake bedding or brake squeal...

sometimes it's dirt that gets on one pad rather than the other or it's rotor glazing, etc... but it is fixable with better quality pads/rotors.

from one google search:
Correct brake pad break-in (bedding) is important to assure quality braking performance over the life of the pad. This procedure allows the rubbing surface of the brake pad to slowly be brought up to temperature. Proper bedding creates a transfer layer film of friction material to be applied to the rotor surface. This allows the brake pad material to rub against itself rather than the bare rotor. This increases the stopping performance of the brake pad and can reduce pad and rotor wear.

My 2013's brakes do not squeak, and never have....Yours should not either. Go back to the Dealer and tell them to fix it, well ask them to. Drop it off and expect they will fix it properly. No need to hear the explanation , just leave it to be fixed, it's not right....best regards Plum

There is a TSB for this for the 2011 and some 2012 models. Check it out in the 2011-2012 Ford Explorers TSB's thread.
There is also a thread on this; http://www.explorerforum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=334376&highlight=brakes where your post could have been added.

If you update your profile to show the model and year so that is shows in the left column where your Forum name appears, you won't have to enter that info every time you post.

Hi Hawks882010,

I want to assist by getting your regional customer service manager (CSM) involved. Send me a PM with your information and I'll get started on your case. I'll need your VIN, dealer, mileage, daytime phone number, and full name.

Thanks!

Crystal

My 2013 has the same squeel.......this was supposedly addressed with the above mentioned TSB on the MY 11/12 vehicles.

Less then 4000miles on it.

I Have the same problem with my 2013 limited. The noise started to happen 4000 miles on it too. I took it in 2 weeks ago and they couldn't duplicate the problem. Hopefully when I take it in for an oil change next time they can find the problem.

I have a 2012 and also have had off and on brake squeal since almost new... it is very annoying indeed. The dealer 're-polished' my rotors (apparently they didn't resurface just re-polished) at about 5K and the squeak stopped for a while. It has since come and gone but now at about 28K it is pretty much always there. I also get the occasional brake locking up and grinding as I release the brakes from stop. When I asked the dealer to take a look they mentioned that they would charge me $90.00 for their effort if they didn't find anything as the brakes are out of warranty now.

At this point I am considering a whole brake job but don't want to put the same new parts in fearing I'll be back to square one in a few months. Any one know if the new larger 2013/14 brakes will fit on a 2012? If not does anyone know of any better brake parts (non-Ford) that can be used?

BTW - I'm shopping for a new second car for my son and Ford isn't even a consideration. I know that all new cars have issues but the customer service (how issues are handled) is what sets them apart and Ford just continues to disappoint me in this department (One year of MFT pains, whistling windshield (TSB'ed), engine overheating twice before TSB was done ...etc. -- in all cases I had to pretty much prove that an issue existed before dealer would do anything for me.

BTW My Explorer is American but I live in Canada (imported).

Thanks for your help

I feel your pain and agree 100%

If I might suggest the police brake package on the Police Interceptor Utility (Explorer) will fit your Explorer and the parts if purchased through a US discount parts seller are not that expensive.

Bigger rotor
Bigger caliper
Different pad composition

These brakes are tested to the LASD extreme conditions and they pass every year. Something Dodge cant do.

Front Caliper Right #BRCF-208
Front Caliper Left #BRCF-209

Rear Caliper Right #BRCF-237
Rear Caliper Left #BRCF-238

Rotors Front #BRRF-112
Rotors Rear #BRRF-92

Pads front #BRF-17
Pads Rear #BRF-1383

Hi everyone,

Those of you who live in Canada should give my colleagues at Ford Canada a call at 1-800-565-3673; they'll look into options to assist. If you're in the United States, send me a PM with your information so I can do some investigating of my own. I'll need your VIN, dealer, mileage, daytime phone number, and full name.

Thanks!

Loud Intermittant Screeching Noise

2011 explorer 2wd, 37000 miles makes loud intermittant screeching noise. the noise stops when applying the brakes. i took it to the dealership to have the brakes checked, and was told they're fine. the noise isn't there all the time, it can go days without making it. i can be driving it for a while, and it will be fine, then the screeching noise starts, goes for a while and stops. sometimes it continues. always stops when braking.

i'm taking my kids on a trip in a few days (500 miles...) and i'm very nervous about this very LOUD screeching noise!!! not sure if vehicle is safe to drive that far.

any help/ideas would be greatly appreciated!
