40 psi and will not start

ok my 91 explorer will not start. it will fire up and then die it will do this all the time, but after a while it will start. i have replaced the fuel pump, fuel filter and checked the plugs. i have ran seafoam thru my intake and any other type of fuell aditive you can think of and it will help for a little while then back to the same thing.

tonight it would not start and stay runing had to have a buddy spray starting fluid into the manifold while i was cranking and then it started. if i just sprayed the starting fluid into the manifold and tryed to start it it would fire and die.

so then i get it runnig and on the way home i hit the gas and it stalls. once i had it started i would have to slowly work my way up to 2000rms it would not go any higher then that when it was in gear. if it was in park it it would rev as hi as i wanted. but it would spuder if i just mashed it. i would slowly have to rev it up there.

so then as i was going home it would stall out on a hill i would put it into neutral and hit the brakes so that i would not roll backwards. i would have to rev it up for about 2 minutes before i could put it into gear and take off. i had to do that about 4 times.

i think it is something with the fuel system but i dont know any more. any sugestion would be helpfull :fire:

Check your fuel pressure at the rail, gauges are $35 at Autozone. Your problem could be a bad fuel pump or FPR.

Can you hear the fuel pump wine when you turn the key to "on," before you crank?

i can hear the fuel pump whine loud and clear. i think that there is plenty of pressuer. but know it is shooting flames out of the manifold when im driving or sititng still. it partaily blew apart my air box

Yikes!! Does it sound like its backfiring? Pull the spark plugs and check the condition.

yea i searched and that is what it is. i puled a couple of plugs and they looked fine i .took of the intake manifold and the whole inside were a dark brown and i spayed it with carb cleaner and it cleaned up. but still it is not running at all right know

Pull all the plugs.

I had a misfiring problem, and I pulled seven clean plugs. The eigth and final plug was black, so 'pulling a few' tells you nothing.

what exactly am i looking for on the plugs? what color or smells?

Yea - any abnormalities such as excessive gasoline smell, black soot, a crack in the ceramic, funky colors, excessive or minimal gap.

Your problem may be ignition related if it's not fuel related. If a spark plug is not firing due to a bad plug, bad wire, bad coil, or even mis-connected wire, the plug in that cylinder should show signs of misfiring.

1) You also might have an injector problem. Have you actually checked the fuel pressure with a gauge?
2) Have you run the KOEO and KOER tests on the computer?
3) Are you 100% sure your plug wires are correct, and seating properly?
4) What about a vacuum leak?

the cel does not come on till it back fires. im going to check all the spark plugs tomrow and look for any vac leaks.

Let us know what the CEL is!!!

ok there is no vacum leaks, the plugs had a little suit on them i cleaned them up and checked the gaps they were all fine. i have a spark i took one of the wires off and cranked the engine and i had a 1 inch long spark coming out of the ruber boot. i checked the coil packs they read within the specs that haynes said so the there fine.

It sounds like a timing problem. Even though it is electronic ignition, the timing can get screwed up. The crankshaft postion sensor may be the problem.

ok i replaced the ckp and now it will start most of the time. but know it sounds like a machine gun. it will stop at about 2000 rpms and sound like im its not firing all the time.
any ideas on what is causing this not enogh fuel presure? or not enough air?

i checked for codes last night. during the koeo test the cel was on but i would conect the jumper to the triger and i would hear a click. and the light would not the light that i was using to read the codes would not flash any thing to me

Sounds like its not firing at the right time. Perhaps the coil is broken, the wires are mis-routed, or the ECU is fried.

This may sound strange but my friend had a similar problem. When his alternator went out it and the battery got low it backfired constantly and it would nearly die when he gave it any gas at all. As soon as he changed out the low battery it ran just fine. But it sounds like it cranks over just fine but i would check the battery and alternator (if you can get it started).

i have 2 batterys so the cables can not be coroded. and there is a new alternator in there. the coils restance were witin specs so the coil is not bad to the best of my knoldge becase i had a prety bug spark when i tested it.

now lets make shure that we are refering to the same module im replacing the computer behind the pasenger kick panel.

would that cause the front fire and smoke coming out of my manifold when i take off the hose and open the valve?

I think v8 was rihgt when he said the fuel pressure regulator. Its makin it run too rich and even flooding it right out by the sounds of it. Check to see if there is any sign of gas from the vacuum niple on the regulator . Some times when they go they will leak gas out of there. Good luck!

ok i just checked the fuel presure i have 20 psi with the car not running. what could cause it to be this low weak pump, clogen line.

i checked my icm it waws fine im going to pull the pump in a little while.

Definitely the pump IMO. When is the last time you changed your fuel filter? How are you checking your fuel pump pressure? Are you shorting the harness leads with the key on and then measuring?
