I think my starter is beginning to go. The battery is good, but the starter seems slower than normal, and it takes a while for the engine to start. I need to take a road trip Wednesday, and plan on buying a starter to bring along, in case it dies along the way. Do I need anything more than hand tools to do the job?

Check the contacts on the battery terminals, starter terminals, and starter wiring for corrosion. A failing starter sometimes needs to be hit with a hammer or it won't turn over. Your starter is getting power but turns slowly due to excessive resistance (low voltage).

Thanks, Brooklyn beat me to it... also check the CCA's on the battery to verify that it is good too.

New battery did the trick. didn't realize how much difference half a volt made. Old battery was around 12V, and almost dead, new battery 12.5 volts and almost fully charged. Thanks, Ed
