I just picked up a donor 4x4 explorer sport same year and model. Im going to swap over everything 4x4 to the 2wd explorer sport, dash, gem, trans, ect.

Is the wiring harness the same for the 2wd and 4x4? or am I going to need to swap those?
Is there anything i should know about the swap before I start?

2001 explorer sport.

thanks!

If your Trans is in good shape, you should be able to just swap the tail shafts to hook up the transfer case. It would be a shame to get it all together only to find out that the Trans that was in the 4x4 is toast! Aside from that, and the wiring for the transfer case, it "should" all swap over, I think! : ) Good luck, and have fun with it!

The trans i have has about 80k on it. The trans in the 4x4 has about 150k ish. the previous owner said it shifts fine. Wouldn't I have to completely disassemble the trans to swap tail shafts?
Thanks, it should be a lot of fun!

I do believe there is some work involved in swapping tailshafts

Yes to swap tail shaft you would have to incompletely tear it down, I would just run the 4x4 one till it hose them convert the other. Other than that it all should just bolt in.

yea, ill just use the donor one while I rebuild or source a decent one.

I'm undecided on trying to put the electronic transfer case in or just getting a manual one from a first gen, id like to have the electronic although for simplicity the manual would be easy. I'm fairly confident, I can get the electronic to work. I would most defiantly put a brown wire mod in. Is the 1st gen going to stand up to more abuse on the trail?

Yes the first gen will hold up to more and no magnetic clutch to rebuild.

I final got a chance to work on it, realized that the steering knuckles were different just swapped those out today. Pulling trans and axle out tomorrow, also swapping out the rear axle's as the donor has a limited slip, as mine does not.

still looking for a good manual transfer case.
