I started having issues with my explorer last night. Got to the car and the dash would light up but to turn over to start the engine, nothing. “Starting system fault” is the message on the screen. If I unlock the door by key and start the vehicle, the alarm goes off and only way to turn it off is the passcode on the door. I’ve checked all fuses and key fob locks and unlocks doors.

The key may need replacing. I'd start with the other spare key. It could also be a sign of a failing battery or a failing anti theft module.

The STARTING SYSTEM FAULT message indicates that PATS did not prove out properly. Could be faulty key, a faulty PATS transceiver, or other wiring/electrical fault.

As mentioned above, have you tried the other keyfob?
