Hmmm your a limited model so Those things are kinda mounted into your wheel...I guess you would have to take the whole wheel off and then they have to be set into some bracket....take airbag off and look at the sides...make sure to pull the battery first though

That can't be the only way!

may i ask what your trying to do?

The switches are held in by small screws, behind the air bag. It's best to disconnect the battery for a good 15 minutes first, and then remove the bag. There is a bolt on each side of the air bag, under small round plastic covers. Take the air bag out and the screws are right there. Night,

what danny is doing is wanting to take the steering wheel controls out (the ones with the stereo, and cruise in them). at the moment, i am converting some switches to blue l.e.d. for him, and asked if he could get them if they are the right ones, and send them to me, so i can do those for him as well. i have regular cruise buttons, but cant find a limited in the wreckers here.

Wow I dont want to remove the air bag...Is it hard?

BTW EVERY ONE HAPPY 22 BIRTHDAY TO ME

As I said, two small bolts, and the air bag will come out. It has a connector on the back, the power must be off for a while or the air bag will go off.

are you scared...don't be...just do it!!!!

make sure the battery is undone though...there aint no way your going to get at those lights without removing the airbag...and if you think your airbag light will come on after...it doesn't removed my bag twice no light

i've actually done it WHILE the truck was running....but hey, i like to live life on the edge! LOL!

start flaming tim........NOW

I think it's about sparking, the signal being interrupted... not to be messed with. I have cleaned up a couple of air bags, that alone was a mess. I don't want to be around an air bag going off unless it's saving my life.

It's possible to do, BUT for your safety, it is NOT recommended.

The air bag deploys at a very high rate of speed and can really hurt you. Even worse if you're holding tools or have your face right up against your steering wheel.

For your safety and that of anyone else helping out, you should always follow the safety procedures in the service manual whenever working with any part of the airbag system.

BTW, even on the lesser models with the cruise control only, you still have to take the airbag out to get to the steering wheel controls.

has anyone ever noticed this thread is composed entirely of "elite explorers?"

I've removed the airbag off my 97 with no problems, but I did disconnect it, I don't want a broken nose or something...

Not anymore :D
Well im a soon-to-be elite, so yeah LOL, but I have a 95, with a worn-out-as-hell steering wheel, along with the cruise buttons, and it would be sweet to swap out for a limited wheel, with the radio controls, but either way, im replacing my CC buttons, theyre like HELL.

i was thinking about this yesterday in fact. the controls are just plain ugly when cracked and I NEVER use them. Radio controls would be nice. is it easy to switch to radio controls? is there a plug?

Brian pay now!! hahaha JK, but really... :p:

See the thing holding me back is

17, part time kroger employee.
checks are between 60-80$ a week,
20 goes from each check for insurance, some for gas.
so that leaves me with bare minimum.

explorer needs
-ps pump
-idler pulley (maybe)
-new plugs and wires
-new battery

the list goes on alot more, but its not stuff thats NEEDED lol, so I just wanna for now get my explorer in tip top shape before i get plates and make her my new DD, then il become elite :D

When I go to Michigan I usually stay in Livonia, and there's a Krogers right in front of the hotel, IIRC on mile 6, not sure of the name of the other street...

I know!! help old ladies carry their stuff to their car for tips :D

If the 99 white limited at the junk yard has the controls witch it should I will practices on that truck taking them out maybe I will try today depending on the price.
