Stock 4WD v8?

That is because someone stole the radio and broke the surround. The AWD surround with no switch is rare. They needed a replacement and used the 4wd panel. If you were to look behind the panel the switch will not be connected to anything

There were no 2nd gen selectable 4wd v8 explorers made by ford. All of them were either 2wd or AWD.

You come here arguing a point we all know to be false. Not to mention, this, which was linked earlier in this thread

Seems like a lot of trouble to go thru if it was available from the factory, don't you agree?

If your 98 v8 had selectable electric 4wd, someone swapped in the transfer case and a smaller gas tank before you owned it. End of mystery

Another great point and now that you say it, it makes me hope there aren't too many people driving around awd explorers with the wrong surround thinking they have selectable 4x4 lol.

Edit: double post

That's not a 4x4 switch, that's an air ride switch. Some V8s had those to control the air ride. Went over it already with some. http://www.explorerforum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=410783

Dom got it, all of those in question were 96-98 Explorer 302's with the ARC air suspension. The 95-98 Limited and Eddie Bauer got the ARC suspension included, and it was optional on all others. That ARC system required some kind of switch(V6 and V8).

The ARC suspension from 95-01 had more special shocks than typical OEM, they included electrical firmness valving internally. That firmness was controlled by a dash switch that simply told the ARC whether it was in the high/stiffer(4WD) mode, or lowered/softer(2WD) mode. I don't recall what those switches were labeled with, and yes the V6 trucks used the normal 4WD switches to tell the ARC what to do. For the 302 Explorers that switch was only for the ARC system, it had nothing to do with the transfer case, which was fully AWD with no shift motor, the BW4403 or 4404. Regards,
