I've had my 93 sport (about 170k) for about 3 months now and everything seemed fine. The other day i was out running errands and going in and out of places. As always the truck was starting/running/shifting perfectly fine. I came out of my buddy's house after about 5 minutes, get in, turn the key, all lights, radio ect. come but nothing as far as the starter goes. The column shifter doesn't click into gears and just freely floats back and fourth. Had it towed and while AAA was backing it up onto the flat bed i noticed a few drops of perfectly clean tranny fluid had dripped out at a certain angel.

I'm thinking maybe a cable or something snapped and left it in a gear causing it to not start. But the small amount of fluid baffles and scares me. Reminder i have not detected any slipping or dragging on that tranny, and the fluid looks brand new. any help or insight would be awsome.

From the sound of this-I would guess the cable snapped also. There is a switch on the transmission which cuts power to the starter circuit if the trans is not in neutral or park--

Thanks for the reply, thats what i'm hoping it is. But where could the fluid have come from? Is that normal when the car is at an extreme "forward" angel. I hate to be a pest but when my cars go into the shop just before the weekend i stress over what the problem could be.

If it was my truck--I'd go look to see what is broken.

It could be as simple as a loose or broken clip--
The fluid is a bit concerning--get under there and look--

Yeah i hear you, thats what i would normally do if it was here with me, but i was 4 towns away when it happened so i had to think fast and had it towed to a garage close to where my parents live. I certainly wasn't gonna pay to tow it back here to my house or some tech i don't know. AAA's tow was free. I am somewhat handy with these things but i don't have the tools, time or the space to take things apart and dig in. Thanks for the help anyway.
