Strange symptom

I have a 1996 explorer, v6 Auto transmissuon XLT. I got in it, stated to engine, and when I put it in gear, the engine shutoff. I noticed also when rolling up the drivers side front window, it went up jittery, studdered. Start stop etc real fast. The car would not start for some time, I had to tow it home. I'm hoping someone might be able to point me in the right direction as to what to check or test. Thank you in advance.

I'd start with the electrical system, check battery voltage, check battery clamp tightness and corrosion, battery clamp to wire corrosion, and battery ground cable termination.

How old is the battery? Was it cranking fast when you started it? I once had a case where my '98's alternator failed, but it had started fine and drive 2 miles to the store, everything seemed fine and it was parked/off for a few minutes, then would not even start.

Thanks for the reply. Battery is new, cranks over fast as usual. Motor runs smooth, but as soon as you put the car in gear, it dies. charging well as usual. Just trying to find out why it dies when plad in gear.

It’s possibly something in the tcc solenoid in your transmission.

Yeah, I was thinking torque converter…weird that operating the windows would also cause it though.

Hanks for your reply. Battery is new and cables all look good.motor runs smooth and charging good as usual. But whn itsput in gear the motor dies. Very strange. I hope it's ot the transmission. It's been rebuilt and it's only been 1 yea and I haven't had any problems with the tranny. I'll keep looking. Thank you for your input.

Only the drivers window acts funny. Wonder if the motor in the window had a short if it would effect the ignition ? Not blowing fuses though. Sure is strange.

@AA7KN I can't say what all runs through it, but there is a black cylinder in the driver's door hinge region with all kinds of connections running through it. If water or dirt gets in there, it can start causing all kinds of weird issues. Might want to get some wiring diagrams before you tear into that. Not necessarily saying to bother him for it first, but 410Fortune (Jamie) has probably posted them on here somewhere.

^ I'd think it more likely a frayed wire than that connector getting fouled, but the diagrams are linked in my sig, besides these two of the connector itself shown on post #3 of this topic:

Pull the power window fuse and see if the vehicle still stalls

Maybe a battery issue or battery cables? Connections?

Maxi fuse 3 in the power junction box under the hood should be power windows

Thinking a short somewhere in the system or just a large power draw (like a weak window motor) maybe causing a power shortage and the pcm and other systems not getting the voltage they need? Check battery voltage, alternator operation and all cabling / connections
