After flat towing a small car (tow bar) on the weekend with the Explorer in tow mode something strange happened. When I arrived home and parked on the street with the engine running I proceeded to disconnect the tow bar, lights and chain and while standing behind the vehicle noticed that the engine was surging. I was right behind the exhaust so it was very noticeable. I then moved the towed car into my driveway and on the way back noticed the Explorer lights dimming and a noticeable clicking noise coming from under the hood. The reduction in RPM, click and light dimming happened at the same time. The car was still in tow mode at the time.
It seems to be operating normally now.
