I am looking to add 33x12.50 or 35x12.50 on my Explorer depending on the lift I choose. On tires I am looking to either put on Super Swamper Thornbirds or Mickey Thompson Baja Belted's. Does anyone or has anyone ever run either of these tires before, Did you like them?, and How did they affect mpg and noise?
Thanks,
Ryan

Ryan - you should've been at the heartland run this weekend, we talked abotu this extensively. I was running the Mickey THompson baja belted hp "all-terrain tires" and so far I've foudn them to be a great universally useable tire. It's great for highway use (what I use it mainly for) because tis quiet and more of an all-terrain tire, but off-road, once you air down the sidebiters are extremely aggressive and could keep up with all of the mud-terrains present. Ask dogman, he seemed pretty please with them, even said if the Swampers weren't already on their way he'd cancel the order to get some Mickey Thompsons.

I have Thornbirds. They work great but they are noisy as hell. They are as loud as boggers. If you plan to a lot of highway driving there are better tires for that.

Matt-
Are the Mickey Thompsons good on the beach and in the mud too??
Thanks,
Ryan

Ryan - I wish I could tell you but since I live in Colorado and the nearest I've gotten to getting my Explorer to the beach was the Truckhaven run. I don't see any reason why they WOULDN'T work great on the beach, in Kansas this weekend I had them aired down to 10 psi and much like the Super Swampers you couldn't even tell they had been aired down, I may experiment later with how low exactly I can go (within reason of course) but I'm guess I could've gotten down to 5 psi or less and had no problem at all. Definately more then I expected!

Ryan,

I was behind Matt most of this past weekend, so I probably had the best view of the M/T HP's in action. I was very impressed. Didn't feel that Matt was compromising his rig's performance one bit. It appeared to me that the impressive performance of this tire came from the area where there the tread transitions into the sidebiters. When aired down, this area does most of the work, and does it well. While it is not made for exteme mud bogging (right Matt?), it performs admirably in the mud and on the rocks. And it really is much quiter than a mud terrain tire on the street. A big thumbs up!

Now Matt, I said it would make me think long and hard about the HP's vs. the Swamper SSR's, if I had not ordered the SSR's yet. Not that I would cancel my order for the SSR's. I'm still curious about the SSR's, and should have them installed soon. Next time we get together, we can do more comparison, or course you might be running the BAJA CLAW by then too.

Ryan, I feel the same way about the Swamper Thornbirds that Paul does. If you're interested in getting Swampers, look into the SSR's. I'll post and let you know what I think of them after I have mine on, which should be within a week. Also, if you chose the M/T HP's, like Matt has, you will not be disappointed. They perform well, and look cool too.

Ryan,
I've had the Baja Belted 32x11.5 on my 95 for about 6 months now. They are loud on the pavement for sure! They cut mpg down by about 2mpg as well. I do love them off road though! They look great and perform very well. Those HPs sound like the way to go if pavement performance is also a priority. My next set will be SSRs or Goodyear MT/Rs.

4wheelin,

i dont know if you have already bought your tires but DO NOT BUY THORNBIRDS!!! they are absolutely terrible! they are sand tires not mudders. they are also extremely loud on the road. i would go with either ssr's or sx/tsl which is what i have i think they look great and i havent gotten stuck with em yet!!
