Techieman33's Front and rear axle swap

The metal condition is most important, the picture doesn't look too bad. That axle is bent more than either of the two from my 99 rollover. I discovered mine while going for an alignment.

Was there indication of everything being wet with grease, or lacking? Is there any metal residue in the grease or on the gears, more than a minor amount? Spray it down in there with brake cleaner to better see the gears and bearings etc. Decide if there is any damage to the gears, bearings or metal in general. How are the other three axles, did you pull them all out? Are there any grooves where the axle bearings ride? Change the axle bearings and seals if possible while the axles are out.

This was purchased from a site vendor as a good 410 rear axle, and a premium price was paid. We shouldn't have to touch it.

That is the least I expect. I also expect help in getting a different one down here since Eric is stranded. No less.

I figured that might be the case, I just went through the steps of trying to get it to work. The best case would be if you can make it work now, and not have to go back into it. Plus of course the seller compensating you for the parts and labor. Regards,

Well,
whatever is done to correct this situation must be done today, as Eric needs to be back to work at 10:00 tonight, in Topeka 2 hours away. We should be buttoning this up now. but no--

And now for something completely different-

we are getting very good at replacing th axles now by golly-had the thing just about buttoned up, while installing the calipers I looked and was all like WTF is with that? And Eric was like Idunno WTF is up with that? The rotor was at an angle to the calipers still-
everything turns real smooth, but why the angle there?

well the old axle is definitely bent, you can see the wobble when you roll it, and when stood up it leans to one side-

After thinking, and almosrt grabbing a beer and calling it a day we noticed this-
the rear caliper mounting bracket was also bent, and cracked.

So, out comes the axle again to switch this over from eric's stock axle.

Also-the mount tabs on the tube itself needed a bit of re forming-Oh my

The truck this axle came from took a heck of a hit. This stuff should have been noticed before the sale IMO

So what do you guys think the seller should do for compensation? The bearing and seals aren't a problem with me since they should have been replaced anyway, but I shouldn't have had to replace the axle shaft caliper bracket and dust shield. Something needs to be done and he doesn't seem very willing to negotiate

wow, thats ridiculous.. i would say the seller should send some of your money back. they sold you an item that wasnt as described, and even if they didnt know its their responsibility!

The seller has refused to give me any money back at all, and will only replace the broken parts with more used parts that at this point I wouldn't put anywhere near my mounty or anyone else I don't think they can be trusted, and I'm not going to risk my life or anyone else's on junk parts. And now it doesn't look like I'll be able to make it to work tonight so now I'm out a days wages on top of all the extra parts I've had to buy.

And Sheri (Jon's wife) is now mad that we can't go to the drive in tonight.

Now the work has been performed to make this " complete" axle actually function.

I am in the thinking the seller needs to make some financial compensation. The " parts exchange" will do no good at this point.

The sale price was 350.00
I don't think a 100.00 refund is out of line, considering we used my axle and caliper bracket, along with the labor of doing the switch. I don not want use replacements from this seller. The agreement I had with Eric was to help with the swap And I get his known good axles. Well, we had to tear into it to make this one right.Unfortunately due to circumstances we had no choice. Not good at all!!

The bearings and seals should have been addressed anyway, granted. However the additional time for several dis assemblies because of bad parts, plus the parts value is well worth 100.00. This axle should have just been taken apart and buttoned up, without the additional hassle.

I have a feeling this will be going to the transaction feedback forum. I hope not. I would like this to be resolved, and all involved to go their separate silent ways.

Buying just a use axle is very hard, the rare places that will sell them separately usually want $75. Most salvage yards will only sell the rearend complete. I had to buy a whole rearend from a 98 Sport to get the axles to fix my bent pair. Fortunately mine was minor, the rest of the rear is good.

The labor for that is not cheap either, most mechanics would require about $100 to do anything minor to the rear, such as the bearings and seals.

I would have been asking for two things, first being a big apology. After a sincere response I would ask for about $150, those parts alone are about $100 or so if you can get them. Good luck with it, I'm glad that you got it done, I would like to know who would sell a poor product like that. Good luck,

...First, this is an Explorer Forum Vendor who sold the part???

...If he can't take care of you guys, how is he going to treat the other forum members???...That is B.S. in my book..I understand things happen and things get missed but not taking care of business is a total lack of respect to the customer, especially if all you are asking is for him to make it right...

...I say, if he isn't up to the $100 fix, take the axle that you can no longer use along with the damaged parts for a total complete axle return...He can refund the total amount and he has a complete axle to show for it...

...If he is going to stay a vendor here, please P.M. me who it is...I would hate to refer somebody like that..:splat:

As it has been stated to me in PM
350 for a rusty bent axle is a whole lot out of line. I think the refund requested is more than fair.

I also know the vendor is watching this thread--the ball is in your court. I have so far neglected to mention names.
I think if you do the right thing though, your name will shine here. Your choice.

Yeah I'm pretty sure the seller knew that the axle housing had a bent shaft. I mean its pretty obvious - especially if you guys are able to tell that the shaft is bent just by looking at the defunked rotor/caliper sitting still. The Explorer this axle was on would have been shaking even just driving around town.

If it had been driven it would have probably shaken the car apart since the wheels would have been wobbling a couple of inches back and for each way.

When I got it I didn't really have any idea what I needed to look for and it was so rusty anyway I couldn't have turned it anyway to find the problem. But since this was a forum vendor I mistakenly thought that I could trust them to sell me a good part.

Yeah unfortunately we've had quite a handful of sour transactions these past few weeks on the forum :(

This was a site vendor though. geez.

Well I've given up on ped5stang, I had hoped that he would do something to make this right but it doesn't seem like he's willing to do anything other than replace the broken parts which are all but worthless to me at this point. I've had to spend over $100 in parts to get this axle working and lost at least 1 days wages ($150) because of this bad axle.

Here's the bad transaction feedback thread

......He sells you a non working axle but he will give you parts to fix it???.. I really must be missing something...I don't think you were buying an axle to work on..I thought you were buying an axle for a quick swap...

...This is a shame..I have dealt with a few of the vendor's on here and they have all been outstanding...I mean, they had over exceded my expectations as in parts and service...Then to hear something like this....I would think if you knowingly sold something that was defective and didn't refund the money, you would expect to pay the consequence's...
