temp gauge

my temp gauge looks like a window wiper when i drive it goes between the N & L. when it sits still at and idle it stays on the R does anyone know what would cause this.

Well it could be anything from a t-stat starting to fail,a temp sending unit starting to fail, a gauge starting to fail or a head gasket problem.

thanks for the info i belive it is the stat that is going the heads where just done on it
