My CEL has come on in my 2000 Ranger XLT 4x4. It used to come on then go off after a while now it is on steady. I do not notice much in the way of performance loss. Any suggestions. I intend to stop at Autozone and get the codes I will post them later. Just looking for possibilities... TIA

Thanks
Scot

when they pull your codes make sure you get the actual codes dont let the guy just tell you "oh its your 02 sensor"

seen it happen to many of my friends...the shops are getting better and more friendly about reading codes for free but during the transition the scanner users have become the same kids that work the registers and something can really get lost in the translation, so the best bet is to actually write down the codes (P0123) and then look them up yourself!

Autozone can also print you out a full decription of your code and diagnostics proceedures if you ask

Oh and the list of "possibles" numbers about 300. So it's better for you to get the actual code than have us guess. Check the EEC-V subforum under the Under The Hood forum. Lots of good info there.

Will do! Sorry for such a noob question.

a noob question would go more like: "Autozone sold me 4 02 sensors and my check engine light is still on, why?"

OK guys. I got a code P0401. I am told its my EGR valve. My next question is going to be How hard is this to replace? I found one for $50 at Autozone does that sound like a good price? Before you ask...Yes a Haynes manual is in my near future:D Thanks for all your help.....Scot

Chances are that it is not your EGR valve. The P0401 is for "EGR flow insufficient" and 99% of the time, that code is caused by a bad DPFE sensor or by a leak in the hoses to the DPFE.

OK I'll bite. What is a DPFE and is it difficult to change?

DPFE sensor = Differential Pressure Feedback EGR sensor.

It allows the PCM to calculate flow rate based on the pressure differential on either side of a flow restrictor.

A DPFE is easy to change. The appearance varies over the years and some bolt on and others are tube mounted. All of them have a three wire connector and two hoses attached. Be sure to inspect the hoses for leaks first before replacing the DPFE.

I don't remember which style your 2000 has but it will look similar to one of these:
