Hello,

im new to the site... :) w0ot for me

but i am looking to buy a used 1997 Ford Explorer XLT. The owner said there is some problems with the Thermostat Housing.... i was wondering if any one knows what kind of problems it could possibly be, and how to fix it? and has this happened to anyone else and how they fixed it and for how much?

Thanks

Don't know what it could be, other than a stripped screw, leaking, or cracked. At any rate, have him knock $500 off the cost, then replace the housing if necessary. It's not a big job....

well its being sold for $1500... so is that a sign that it isnt worth it? i mean im not the richest guy there is, so if something breaks due to the Thermostat Housing, that could put me in the hole.

What, exactly, is wrong with the thermostat housing? The worst that could happen is that it breaks off and empties 14 quarts of coolant all over the front of the engine, which you would probably notice. (or so I should hope)

What, exactly is wrong with it? If it's just a new housing it needs, talk the guy down to cover the cost of replacement. It's not a big job.

thats just it, its a little shady right now. I asked the owner(via email), how it broke and he hasnt replied back. i know most people dont check their email that often, but when i first told him i was interested in it by email, he replied the next day. So i dont know exactly what is wrong with it or how it is malfunctioning.
He just said "Problem is with the thermstat housing... repairable, but not worth is for me b/c I now have a company car. Priced well below Blue Book value in order to make repairs.
"
i could care less if it is that, because its not expensive to repair. the most being $150 depending on it i want to get a chrome finished housing, a new thermostat, and some gasket and sealer . But my father said i shouldnt bother with the car anymore because he said it is probably because it over heated, and that will lead to other problems that are expensive. but i really dont listen to him much.
so thats basically how the situation is, and all that i know.
