Think my Mechanic made a BIIIG mistake, please help!!

It is my bet the bearing is trashed from driving it with the loose / missing nut.

You should fire your mechanic.

That was an IDIOT mistake that could have cost you or some one else their life.

Wow, thanks

I didn't mean to start any arguments about what type of vehicle I have, calm down guys! I said it's an AWD, and I stand by that, yes it is a V8, and according to the local Ford/Mercury shop, yes it does have a 4 Lo....it's all automated, no switches....apparently it was all related to a discrepancy in tire sizes.....they reset the computer to relern it all, and it seems fine

Thanks to all for the constructive help, sorry to those that I didn't give enough info to....thanks again for the help

jack the front end up and turn each wheel by hand, see if theirs any binding, maybe he installed something wrong or bend something.

Umm-now I am confused-
the computer has absolutely nothing to do with the awd transfer case, nor does the awd case have a 4 lo of any kind. There is no shifting at all going on in a 4404 awd case-

I think he reset his mistake and bought you a new hub and nut-;)

I'd fire your dealer as well. Like Jt posted there is no 4 low in a 1997 v8 stock, period. Explorer AWD, the real thing not the clunky auto 4x4, uses no sensors, computers, or wires. I'd call and verify what he actually did. Resetting the computer DID NOT fix it.

And differently sized tires will burn up the t case in short order.

I was right in the first place. =) I win.

Anyways...........

If if was the axle nut you're hub is fubared and it's the mechanics fault. Take it back and make him replace the hub he owes you, and I'd ask for the old one back so you can make sure he actually replaced it.

FYI new hubs from Ford are approx $180

V8 Explorer = full time AWD, no 4x4 of any kind, no low range, its not possible trust us we know more then your stealership believe it or not.

See now.. He's right.. That's the sad part.

He's only technically right if he's referring to a second-gen. 3rd gens come with a 44-05 and a 4.6 starting in '02.... So, we'll let him think he's right, while we all snicker and point. :P

As already mentioned, if it's an AWD V-8 second-gen (i.e. 95-01), then it's all wheel drive, and there is no low range in the transfer case.

And the wet-noodle-beating of the mechanic and dealership tech should commence for all the afore-mentioned reasons.

Ditto, but this will not be true if we keep converting them. In 10-20 years there will be no more AWD 95-01's.
