I started using acetone in my gas a week ago. The amount I used was 2 oz. per 10 gals. After a day I noticed that my engine idled smoother, even my wife noticed it. The performance seems to be better. Really noticed this when passing. For the biggie. I drove a trip with a one-way mileage 346 miles one way. The trip was from the Seattle area via I-90 to Colville WA., about an hour and 20 mins. north of Spokane. There was a mountain pass several large hill climbs involved. If you have ever crossed the Columbia River east of Ellensburg you know what I mean. I run 65 mph on the Interstate and 50 on the state route (100 miles of the 346 mi.). On previous trips the best I got was 20.3 mpg. Without changing anything, this trip I got 22.7 mpg. I understand that most folks got better mileage with more tank fulls. My second tank has yet to be calculated. Will report back.

awesome thanks for the info.

Keep us posted.

I saw a test on mythbusters, using acetone to increase mileage. Their result was no mileage improvement. They actually used a dynometer for their tests.

There may have been a problem with the way Mythsbusters....

did their test. As I understand it, depending how dirty the engine is, you may not see an improvement until the second tank of gas. I can only report back what I experienced. I am impressed enough to know that I will continue to use it. I have had my Explorer for 14 years, since new, I know how it performs and this is better.

(Gas modified by Acetone results ) search for this tread has long some infor for u many here are using this in their gas tank at fill up :salute:

i didnt see any positive results in my 96 till the 3rd tank. But there is a definite improvement in gas mileage, i dont know so much about power but then again 33's will kill your power lol. But i saw the episode of mythbusters and thought the same thing about thier test being flawed.

I always see an improvement in my gas mileage after I use an injector cleaner. From what I am hearing, it sound like the acetone is simply cleaning the injectors (acetone is a solvent). So the question becomes is the acetone improving the mileage by modifing the fuels characteristics, or is it simply acting as a injecter cleaning compound?

WOOOHH you're from black diamond? you practically live next door to me.

I have done research on the subject.

What I have gleaned is that acetone changes the surface tension properties of the gas molecule. This allows for better atomization for a better burn pattern in the cylinder. As you say it does clean the engine and I think that's why it may take a tank or two to see the increase in mileage. When I made my trip it was on the second tank. I have yet to refill the third tank so I have not calculated the mileage. One side benefit is that if acetone is a cleaner it's much cheaper to use than Seafoam or any of the commercial cleaners. From what I understand acetone is a major ingredient in Seafoam.
My study has just begun and I will continue to report my results.

Remember, acetone is also a quick drying chemical. So does it moisten the dirt then allow it to flake & burn off? A lot of alcohol properties in acetone. Can I use fingernail polish remover (Acetone based)????

Hardware store, Home Depot.....

A couple things to note.

Use the highest quality Acetone you can find (99%)

Use quality gasoline, even AM-PM's quality is in question and you won't get maximum effect.

Gas with Ethanol reduces the effect.

As for it taking 3 tanks to see results, that could be the ECM learning a possible chemical difference measured by the engine sensors, like the o2 sensors.

I'm not a chemist but the surface tension claims have been in question in various threads on variouse boards.

Now for Jamie and Adam. Their show is far more entertainment that science.

Gas in NY is 10% ethanol all year long. With that to consider does anyone have a recommended amount per 10 gallons?

Just finished my third tank

To follow up my mpg results from my second tank. My mileage went down slightly, I suspected this would happen. The mileage went to 22.23 down from the 22.77. This is due to the fact this tank was just a tad over 1/4 tank of city driving. I thought my mileage would have dropped more than that. Very happy. Engine runs very well and idles great.
