I have 92 4x4 automatic... The sound is not there all the time, that's the thing... Only seems to happen at random times for no reason, or a reason that I don't know

No you don't have to get a Warn hub kit, but if you do they are practically indestructable, but if you're not breaking stuff you're not wheeling hard enough!
