I have a 98 Model XL Explorer AUSTRALIAN DELIVERED. The car has developed a strong ratte and I'm told it's coming from the timing chain... has anyone had to replace a time chain? The ford dealership are saying that the whole engine needs to come out for them to replace the chain... I'm no mechanic but that doesn't sound right. Anyway if anyone has any advise please let me know.

.........if you have the SOHC.

Get it done soon, I need a new engine now because of a timing chain failure!

I don't know if Aussie delivered vehicles are covered under the recalls, but if it's a SOHC, it has been recalled for that. If I remember correctly, the recall program is 00M12. The warranty was originally extended to 7 years 70000 miles, but recently they have "quietly" extended it to 100000 miles.

You might wanna bring the recall up to your dealership, and make a stink if they don't wanna play ball.

Exploder

Can you verify that Fords are still carrying out the 01M01 and 00M12 extended warranty repairs in the US.
It might help my case. My X engine blew last week after the (what we now know to be the timing chain) rattle was incorrectly put down to a serpentine belt noise.

I'm gonna change mine when I do the cam swap. But I really wanna get gears instead. I've seen them in Summit, but I don't know if they'll fit the X. Anyone know ?

gears, any gears for an 8.8 will fit the front is not reverse cut like teh 1st gens

No, not those gears. I'm talking about drive gears that replace the timing chain. Its a whole lot more accurate and last longer

The ones Billy177 are refering to are for 302's and 351's, I have built many a small block in my day, and rebuilt a couple of sohc's, those will not fit anywhere on an sohc. as far as I know there is no timing gear set for the sohc V-8. Because of the layout from the crank up to the top of the head, gear driven cams as a "up-grade" for the sohc are probably never going to happen, IMHO.

he has a 5.0

and that's why I just lurk... lol

read your vehicle bio, not his..

He will have to modify the inside of his timing chain cover to make them fit, not hard, dremel will do it. only need to remove about 3/16" x 1".

Camshaft Chain Tensioner

00M12 NOV 00 Campaign - Camshaft Chain Tensioner & Intake Gasket

Is Camshaft Chain Tensioner the same thing as Rear Chain Guide Tensioner?
Mine broke last year and I had to replace the engine, but the dealer only mentioned the extended warranty on the front chain guide tensioner. It was $4500 out of pocket.

I hav the smae prob. rattling noise so i took it to a shop and they said definitely the front chain and maybe one of the rears. Is it the chain that is recalled or what? And what could i do to get it warrantied? What have any of you done, cuz im not up for dishing out a lt of cash.

I did mine on the Anzac weekend and i can tell you its a pain of a job but what I discovered is that my problem could all have been done from under the car by removing the sump not even the front covers needed to com off.
The thing that was ratteling in mine and its a sohc 98 x as well was the tensioner that runs on the jack shaft chain their are 4 cahins in total 1 at the rear "runs the left cam" and three 3 in the front one runs the "right cam" the main one runs from the crank timing and the third runs the jack shaft which in turn runs the "left cam". A pretty complicated engine i found I'm an old ford man myself and found no problems on the old windsors and clevo's.
good luck look a little more listen with a stethascope to try and close in on where in the motor the noise is coming from if it lower front I'll guareente that its the jackshaft cahin tensioner and can be done from underneath.
You will be "Rattled" at the end of it I was GOOD LUCK.

I got a 97 with 105k and I took mine in for the Tensioner recall at 82k well, they didn't inform me that it messed up the spockets and chain so guess what it was back in a week later to get the main chain and spockets replaced only $564.00 to fix what there problem caused.
