2002 Ford Explorer XLT
I have a 2002 Ford Explorer XLT with a little over 67,000 miles on it. Have been reading about the different opinions on pings and knocks. Finally ask a friend from a local Ford Dealership about this rattle I was getting. He said it was probably the timing chain tensioners and recommended some Lucas Oil Stabilizer. Had the vehicle serviced yesterday morning. Drove approximately quarter to half a mile with the same noise and suddenly the rattle stopped and haven't heard it since. Highly recommend this product. It was the Lucas Heavy Duty Oil Stabilizer.................

Welcome to the site:chug:

I'm going to move your thread to our "Under the Hood" forum.

Exactly how much Lucas oil did you add?

This is a common (and serious as far as Im concerned) issue with these trucks. Turns out ford did a recall sort of thing that lasted like 6 years and Im wanting to say 72k miles (could be wrong on that). Its like a $1800 repair from what I understand so if your still within the mileage cutoff, I would get it to the dealer NOW. They have to fix that and the intake gaskets at the same time fom what I understand.

As far as Im concerned ford did a **** job of letting poeple know about it. I never found out till I was past the mileage cutoff. I thought it was a spark knock problem and the dealer originally told me that it was normal due to lean burning emissions friendly engins and all that.

Ask your friend why he didnt tell you about the recall since he was right on about the tensioners.
