Timing Chain/SOHC?

Is it possible to change out the timing chain on a SOHC without removing the engine?

Primary chain can be done very easily with the engine installed. The rear chain from the jackshaft to the right head is easier to do with the engine removed, but I have seen it done in the car (I wouldn't try it).

Timing chain itself should never have to be changed

WHat about the FRONT Jackshaft Tensioner and Guide ??

My 98 4.0SOHC has this "Diesel-like rattle" also.

What is the MOST likely culprit ?? The Tensioner OR the guide going bad ??

How much "should" I expect to pay a Ford Dealership to replace these (2) parts ??

The front cam cassette is supposedly the biggest pre 2002 4.0 SOHC problem. Get the TSP kit which includes the front tensioner and a check valve(plastic stick). If the rear tensioner can be reached, do that too.

I had my 99 body off, and changed all of those parts, plus the jackshaft chain, and balance shaft tensioner. My balance shaft was out of time. If you get into the engine, and it's a 4x4, check the timing of that balance shaft chain. Good luck,

You have had only one done, correct? I don't know the numbers of the TSB's, I did the research prior to my work, back in the winter. I spoke with a trusted Ford technician, and he told me the story. I've just detailed it more here on this forum. All of the chains and plastic parts are suspect. The cam tensioners have springs in them that I believe will not last much beyond about 75,000 miles.

Owners of these 4.0 SOHC engines should seriously consider going into them about every 75,000 miles. All of these valvetrain parts should be checked, and many replaced. Night.

I do believe so. It was the 00M12.

I have to have an OASIS pulled back up and see for sure.

I don't think my EX has had the 01M01 done. (Yet....)
