I am planning on putting a custom cat back w/ dynomax super turbo muffler in. The muffler guy figured he could do a better job on his own rather than going with a kit. He figures going with a 2 1/2 in and 3" muffler out is going to do the trick. he said he will have to convert the stock incoming 2 1/4 to make this work...how does this sound? Speaking of sound, the muffler he is looking at putting in is pretty short (13 inches i think) is this going to be loud ( I am not really looking for a thumper).

most dynomaxes are good... but if you want quiet, they may be too loud for you... also, you will want no more than 2.5 on the exit or you will have too little backpressure and no low end torque......

Personally , I would keep the stock Diameter pipe all the way around , all your gonna acomplish by going bigger is less low end torque ( bottom end power ) and gain top end power (top speed) . Most people need all the torque they can get (towing , offroad , passing etc.) Now if you're gonna do headers , open element intake , chip, Throttle body , full exhaust . Then it would make sense because together they would all make a power/ torque package ..... ;)

i had the super turbo muffler, it sounded pretty good, nice and loud when you really get on it, cant hear it at cruising speed. i had 2 1/4 piping thoguh. now i just scrapped the whole muffler thing and got 2 1/4 piping all the way back after the second cat.

Putting it 3" on the way out is going to not only be "loud" but sound stupid (IMO) a lot of the volume with be from resonance in that huge 3" pipe and it will not be a "good" sound, and depending on all kinda things like length, twistiness, you could setup a situation for really REALLY annoying resonance, especially at cruising speeds. My personal opinion would be to get a straight up cat back from someone, they aren't that expensive and you can pretty much bet on them not having annoying resonance.
