I just installed 255/70-16 tires on my 2002 Explorer XLT. Ford puts 235/70-16s on this vehicle and 245/70-16s on the EB and Limited.
I know the diameter is slightly bigger - about
half an inch (255 vs. 235) but the garage that
mounted and balanced told me that I was going to
screw up the transmission and possibly the anti-lock brakes due to the speed sensors on the
wheels. The garage also said I wouldn't be able to get an accurate front end alignment with the
255s. The garage also said something about this
potentially causing the ck engine light to come on. Does anyone out there have any experience in
this regard? Does any of this many any sense?
Thanks in advance, jia

dont EVER, EVER, NEVER EVER use that garage agian. everything that shop said is B.S.. you will NOT screw up your brakes, you will NOT screw up your tranny, you will NOT make the check engine light come on, and you WILL be able to get an accurate front-end alignment. it really pisses me off that there are actual vehicle service centers out there that are this F.N. stupid.:fire:

no, your perfectly fine, i put p265's on mine- no problem. don't go back to that shop, buncha hillbillies

You won't have any problems other than your speedometer and odometer being off. Since the new tires are 3-4% larger, your drivetrain is going to spin that much slower, and thus your speed and odo may be off by as much as 4 miles at highway speeds. You'll read slower than you're actually going. Until you get it recalibrated, be careful!

Thanks very much for all the consistent replies.
I justed needed confirmation that this info
from the garage didn't make much sense and I
got it.
Thanks Again,
JIA

Anyone have pics of their explorers (3rd Gen) with the 255's or 265's on their vehicles? Any modifications need to make them fit? Any rubbing during tight turns? I'd love to get all this info as I would like larger tires on my 02 limited as well!
