Top speed for the 5.0L

I was done dealing with them.. *sigh*

Alright, I did the TT.. and got it aligned........ after a couple days.. my wheels sat like this, / / = \ \

Took it back in, and they threw a fuss, but did it anyways. (keep in mind, both times.. they kept changing my appointment.. contantly)

They said someone must have been messing with me, because all my bolts to the upper control arms were loose.. and that they torque everything down blah blah... they re-did it.. (steering wheel is STILL off) but everything is solid and the numbers were close enough to stock spec I left it at that.. I'm not going back there for anything. I'm done with that place.

Sears Mechanics are BOTTOM OF THE BARREL....it didn't used to be that way though. The WORST ones were at Montgomery Ward's, and Kmart....Monkey Ward's went out of business, Kmart quit working on cars....and NOW Kmart owns Sears. (NOT the other way around, like some people believe)...it's the CIRCLE OF LIFE!...it has come full circle. Sears/Kmart is STILL the worst place to take your vehicle to!

I think he meant it had quite a bit of adjustments available, camber, caster, toe. Race car suspension haha

Shortly after i bought my ex i decided to punch it to see. the road leading out of town to my house is about 3/4ths of a mile long perhaps a touch longer with a slight uphill grade, id say 4 to 6 degrees (Taking guesses here dont potshot me) but going from 35 which is town speed limit to the stretches 55 speed limit (no one ever follows it) with my "race car suspention" equipped explorer i hit 108-110 before i took my foot out of it to leave me enough room to stand on the brakes so i could turn into my driveway, when i let up the front end dropped. Im sure it could do more but honestly i dont want to, way too freaking shakey (that little strip gets some mean winds too)

Except you have a speed limiter that kicks in before 108mph. And I really doubt you have S rated tires or better on a SUV, so congrats on being an idiot if you aren't exaggerating your speed and have the 1 explorer ever built without a speed limiter.

His speedo could be off by a couple mph, and he probably hit the limiter or was just about to, unless he has a tune. If he had a tune than he could have kept going. As far as tires go any street legal tire would be fine at that speed for a short burst. The rating is more for cruising speed, the faster you go the more heat you build up in the tires, going up to 110 and then slowing right back down wouldn't be enough time for the tires to heat up. And he just might have S rated tires of better, my toyo's are V rated (149 mph).

The real problem with a top speed run is the brakes, if he had to stop in a hurry things could have gotten ugly very quickly, the same goes for making any kind of evasive maneuver.

I used to love the braking power of my truck........ Until I got the 33's with some steel rims..
Just for the hell of it I tried a top speed out of town on a long straight a way.. 103 is as far as it would go unless I stayed on it but I didn't wanna stay that fast for too long as these tires are R rated: 100mph max, my 31's were S rated and I took them faster.. these trucks are a lot more stable at higher speeds than people give them credit for, I often hear about vibration and other odd feelings at high speeds... if your balljoints are good, alignment is good, wheels balanced, good ujoints..ect... You shouldn't have a problem.

These trucks can do over 100, problem is.. they can't get there quick so it's kinda pointless..

Btw ugexe: With my stock limiter, my top speed was 110.

Im not exactly sure what i did to you, however id appreciate not being called an idiot, I was just relaying an experence. And at that time i had a 50% meat left set of Toyo Proxes ST II on there, So im pretty sure they could handle the speed if you want to make sure however

Not aiming to be disrespectful here, just saying

His speedo could be off by a couple mph, and he probably hit the limiter or was just about to

It was, once i put new tires on, got an alignment done and had it all checked out, instead of reading 2 off on my GPS, for some reason (im guessing the prior owner had a slightly larger size put on, i didnt really check i wanted something a bit more suited twords a m/s tire so replacing them was my first option, toyos on my cars not my trucks is my mentality) my speedo reads true.

These trucks can do over 100, problem is.. they can't get there quick so it's kinda pointless..

Ive noticed that, once i hit about 75-80 it takes a little longer. However ive since gotten over the thrill of having a v8 and now drive it alot more respectfully.

Oh and one more thing, the "race car suspention" crack was in regards to a prior comment of a poster about a sears wheel kid saying that his explorer had racecar suspention.

IMO the suspension issue is the key element in these high speed conversations, not the tires. A 4500lb vehicle with a high center of gravity and loose leaf spring rear, it's bad to drive them fast. Anything over about 80mph is not wise, idiot is an accurate term for going 100mph+ in an Explorer on typical roads.

When and if the Explorer has to make any sharp sudden movement of the steering wheel, because you cannot go perfectly straight any more, bam/flip/roll. The truck is destroyed and somebody is going to get very hurt. The best thing to do is not do it, not talk about it, any when it does happen make sure it's on a deserted stretch of wide highway instead of a normal road.

Durign the trip I made to STL I specifically remember that highway. A friends Jimmy got smoked by an SS Camaro :p were rolling along as fast as the jimmy would go (like 98+) and the CEL came on.. bahahah

lol thats funny as hell :)

At those speeds, a highway stretch or track is the only thing desirable at that point.. bumps aren't very comforting. lol..

Btw, You can turn to a degree, like changing lanes comfortably.. But you have to do it with respect. In this vehicle absolutely no jerky movements at that speed, it'll all go bad.. I'd say 70 is the fastest for evasive maneuvers in this truck, 75 max.

And before anyone jumps on me for that: I live in Alaska.... Moose. I made the move quickly and comfortably at that speed. I think the biggest problem is people who go to correct and jerk the wheel the other way completely too fast and too much.

I took my Ex to 120, racing a blazer SS ("modded up"), this was about 10-11 months ago. I had to hit the next exit for home (freeway) and my OD light started flashing and my trans kind of kicked out then too, the next morning I had a 2-3 shift flare... but don't tell anyone that. lol.

I assume this was on your 4.0L? Gotta make sure all your fluids are good and up to level, and no worn bearings anywhere... things have to be in pretty good shape to push your vehicle that far.

Yeah yeah pish posh. lol.
The truck is fine besides the flare, I'm not entirely certain that's why either. :dunno:

I only made it to about 95 before I had to shut her down but there seemed to be alot of room left. Anyone break 110??

MR XLT
We got ours to 106. Still had room to play
