I want to tow my recently acquired '90 Ford Thunderbird SC from Rochester, NY to Erie, PA. U-haul says my car does not weigh enough to tow it using an auto transport. My car is a '97 with the 5.0L and AWD. I purchased a Ford Class 3 hitch and I will be installing it later today. Has anyone else encountered a problem like this? The Thunderbird weighs right around 3600lbs according to Edmunds.com. My Explorer was supposedly equipped with some optional towing package. Should my Explorer be able to tow this load????

Yes. It will tow it. Stopping is the biggest concern, as well as heat.

Before the trip junk the stock tranny cooler and install the biggest cooler you can find (Hayden class A motorhome works great)

Check the condition of your brakes before the trip.....

Getting a 4000# load moving with an Explorer is no problem, its stopping that can cause problems.....

I believe the max towing load for a Exploder is #5500

I would recommend a tranny fluid change too. Maybe a switch to synthetic.

Good luck.....
