I'm going to be putting a hitch splitter on and adding a 4 bikes rack, with a cargo rack below those for luggage. This will all hide the brake lights more than I like. I'm considering adding a set of brake/turn signal lights you would use on a boat, on the back of the cargo rack.

I've never wired anything like this before; though, I've wired many car stereo's, radar detectors, etc. So, I get the idea. I looked at the harness on the Explorer. Are the kits I see on Amazon going to plug right into that harness? Do I need something special? I don't want to be splicing wires, at all.

Considering a kit like this:

Thanks!

It looks like it may do the trick. Doesn't the factory tow hitch have both 4 and 8 pin connections? This one seems to be 4 pin if I read it correctly.
This seems to be the setup that many tow truck operators use on vehicles they are towing.

I agree with Peter.
That should work just fine.

Do you have a trailer plug on your Explorer now? I'm not sure if the Sport trim includes the trailer hitch.

If you don't have the trailer plug already I would get a kit from Etrailer. You can either get a 4 pin flat connector wiring or the larger 7 way one.

With the kit from Etrailer there is no cutting and splicing wires, it is all plug and play right into the Explorers wiring.

The tow package was standard on the 2019 Sport.

Folks, need a bit more help. I was ready to hook that kit up and finally popped the plug under my bumper and saw this connector. Not the flat pin I was expecting. Anyone have experience with what I need to make this work?

Any auto parts store should have that adapter to go from the 7 pin to a 4 pin.
