trails in maryland

kinda don't really know where to put this, hopefully someone on here will be able to help, but this weekend i am going to be visiting cunningham falls state parck in maryland, kinda outside frederick by an hour or so(north of) and i was wondering if there are any trails in the area i could have a run on. any help would be a great help. thanks in advanvce!!

AHHH cunningham falls my old stomping grounds. theres really no place legal up there to go. i wish i could direct you everywhere i used to go but it would be impossible plus ints been awhile. sorry not much help but if you go past the falls to tower road or old mink farm road take those and look around. escpecially old mink farm you should find something.

since the topic was trails in maryland ,, I thought I would add this in here in case somebody was looking for just that.......

1) Howard county. "coca cola drive"...

From 95.. take Route 100 southbound about 5miles take the Coca Cola drive exit, Left at light, go about 1/2 mile across train tracks,,, Trail park is on left....
On weekends this place is packed full of dirt bikers, 4wheelers, etc. (( This place gets packed )) I never had a problem being in there from local law inforcement.

2) Anne Arundal county. "Reliable Sand Factory"

97 southbound in Croften, enter through the main gate turn right at weight scales, turn left at first left. LOTS and LOTS of trails, sand dunes, etc,etc (( many miles of rugged trails to explorer )) .. Never had a problem here either, Be riding dirtbikes back there for over 15years.

3) Anne Arundal county. "The Dillies"

From 695 take Fort Smallwood Road Exit.. Left at light
go about 5miles. Right turn onto Marly Neck Blvd, ( just past Georges Volkswagons,cant miss all the classic VW's) Go about 3 miles,, You'll see several trail heads on the right side of road.. If you go past the powerlines turn around.. (( many trails to ride along ,, some on water front... great fishing spots aswell !!!!!)) You could get a tresspassing ticket from local law enforcement, i never received one,, can't say you wont.

4)Anne Arundal County. "Yellow Gate"

I can't recall the roads to get there very well,, except its on Patuxent Road near Odenton maryland,, so you'll have to look it up.. The trails are behind Patuxent Ponds,, and extends for miles, encludeing flat ground, swamps, dry river beds, mud holes,.. I can't confirm this but i was told about a month ago that the US govn't owned the land for Wildlife managment, so you might not be able to off road there anymore..

Running trails on property you have no permission on is a bad idea, I'm approximately 10 minutes from Coca Cola Drive and I used to see Anne Arundel/Howard County police there enforcing No tresspassing. Not to mention, there is construction going on there right now and there is a off-duty police security company that watches that place.

Coca Cola drive - do a search for it- plenty of arrests on the property.

All of the others sound like private property also, and unless you have WRITTEN permission to use them they are illegal.

do a search on Green Ridge State forest on google. About 20 miles of national forest trails that are legal and free. Not to chalenging, but fun. I have been up ther a few times, and it is only about 1 1/2 hours from DC.

Unfortunately there is nothing legal and challenging in Maryland. Best bet is to Rausch Creek or Paragon in PA or GWNF in Virginia. The ones in PA are probably a 3 hour drive for you and the GWNF trails are probably equal to that. Yep, basically any hardcore legal wheeling is pay for play at Rousch Creek, or Paragon, couple of places in WVA, or at events like Big Dogs in Gore VA, and a very few others on private property.

Greenridge, and asategue(sp?) are the only public places I know of in the state.
In the DC area we usually head to VA, where the choices are GWNF around Harrisonburg, Stateline trail out 66, and Petersmill= although that is not much more than a dirt road after Porsche sponsored it and built a bridge and regraded the "trail". These are the only real legal free spots- after a few trips people head to Rousch Creek, and Paragon.

There's some free wheeling out in Cecil county by Chesapeake City..right off the C & O Canal (sp?). I know this because A) I see atv's and the occasional mud bogger running through it, and B) I asked the MD State Police. They have no problems with it as long as you're not abusing the privilege (IE: drinkin, shooting, etc)

There used to be a small wheeling spot in Harford County off Mercedes Drive that was free for all, but the local Jeep boys have been going back there and drinking so now there's police posted

Damn, I got all excited about that Coca Cola drive one before I read the other posts, too.....

I'm told there's a small but fun place off Sugarhill Drive by me, but I need to go tag along with the guys who go there and see just how illegal it is first!

Well I was out yesterday and drove up to Coca Cola Drive and didn't see any security but did see alot of trucks with trailers probably for atv.

Yeah, i used to live across from coca-cola and i even got a ticket riding my bmx in there.... the only place i know of that is ok to ride is "bloody pond" in Glen Burnie, and "the laurel pits". The laurel pits has like 20+ acres to ride on. if anybody's interested i plan on going up there this weekend. If anyone needs directions, let me know!!

I live in Southern PA and to tell you the truth its hard to find "legal" places to go except for rausch creek and paragon. however if you are interested up in the mountains of Northern PA you can do soem serious wheeling and even relax at a nice campground for a few days. if your interested in where at in Northern PA just let me know i can hook you up with a good campground and some directions to some good spots. And yeha i know its off topic but i just dont know of anywhere legal you could go to saginaw in Southern PA its only an hour North of Baltimore but again its not exaclty legal bu tnoone gets busted there.

Do yourselves and the Fourwheeling community a favor and make sure the land you wheel is legal. Just because someone tells you its OK, doesnt mean that it is- in most cases you need written permission to use someone elses land. YOU have to check it out. Yahoos that wheel llegal land, go off the trails and think they can go anywhere and do anything ruin it for everyone else. No one will thank you for that.

Like was posted before- there are few legal places to wheel in MD, actually on the east coast. Most of the places you all mentioned are illegal.

I don't think the Laurel pits is legal. I know about the place but I don't trust the word of mouth concerning this place. I rather pay to wheel then get caught wheeling illegally.

True....my friends go up there to use thier atv's, and they have had no problem, but I wouldn't want to get caught there. I think the only place remotely close to us is this green ridge forest, and even that's a little drive, but I am sure that it's probably worth it!!

Steve you're absolutely right..sometimes I get so excited to wheel that I forget how easy it is to add to the "four wheelers are law hating rednecks" stigma. Thanks for bringing it up.

Xplorin, another Maryland member on this board named Savage Wolf has wheeled his first gen in mostly stock form out in Green what-ever-it-was park near Deep Creek Lake. He's told me a few times it was a lot of fun and could be pretty challenging at times, but the camping is great.


AllOutwar, I might be interested closer to summer when it's hot as hades down here Not too keen on paragon so much anymore since one of its guides and I don't get along and I'm not the type to put up a fight... and besides, it's nice to try new camping/wheelin spots!
