I have a 90 4.0L and recently adjusted the bands and cleaned the governor and changed the trans fluid. Just drove it about 20 miles and noticed it leaking trans fluid at the belhousing. I checked the fluid level and I may have over-filled it. But it is hard to tell has the each time I check the dip stick the reading is not sharp.
My question, if it is overfilled, would you expect a leak as described...which I assume means that it is leaking at the torque converter to trans seal.
I remember reading that one common leak area is at the torque converter. This 90 4.0L has been parked for 10 years and maybe the seal has hardened. Then again, it could be just as simple as being overfilled.

I just placed it backwards on the drive, with the nose pointing down. With the engine running it was dripping out pretty good. But it slowed, became even less and then almost stopped. I fear the seal was damaged, but if it is, why would the leak slow? The dip stick seems to say the level now at the top of the cross hatch (while on level ground)

It's most likely the seal.
