Pulling my SOHC from the 97 XLT 4x4, can't seem to get the two passenger upper tranny bolts, there doesn't seem to be a way to get to the buggers.

Any ideas?

Also anyone having or able to email/psot a pciture of their 03/04 SOHC motor, especially near the alternator area, that would be helpful as well.

thanks,

Marc

gotta get up on it and hit it from behind

ok, that sounded bad, but yeah thats how you gotta do it. Straddle the motor and get them top bolts from the back, might have to use a box wrench + BFP (Big F**king pipe).

with a body lift you dont have to though

Uh, see the problem is, one is covered by a bracket that is mounted by the bolt, then other is recessed between two ribs on the trans case. Looks like socket country.

The torque is not that bad, I busted the others loose with a 3/8th ratchet.

You can get to the upper bellhousing bolts a couple of ways. ONe like mentioned the "arm scraper" get up on top of the engine, reach around, use a 1/4" drive or wrench = PITA. My knees hurt thinking about this.

I am not sure about the SOHC but these bolts hold the trans dipstick, vent tube, vaccuum line, and 02 sensor wiring clips = more fun.
I ditch that metal thing that holds allt hat junk and replace with strategic zip ties.

Or you can drop the trans mount and let the trans hang just a bit, use long extensions and get to those suckers from around the back of the trans. Two people here is great, one can climb up on the engine and "guide" the socket on and one hit the air gun or ratchet.

Fun fun.

Dropping the exhaust and going through the wheel wells can also save time doing this....

Pull the front seats out and go through the floor.
