Will it fit against the engine? yes.
The back of the transmission is completely different however, one has a tail housing and output shaft designed to mate up with the rear driveshaft (2wd). I believe the slip yoke is also built into this.
The 4x4 unit has a tail housing and output shaft designed to mate up to the t case.

So the answer is not really. I am not sure if you can unbolt the 2wd tialhousing and bolt on the 4wd tail housing, but my guess would be no.

If you have the 4wd tranny and the 2wd tranny i THINK you can swap out the tail housings.? Glacier would the be the one to ask as he is pretty much the explorer tranny guru around here :D

with an automatic this requires dis-assembling the entire trans to swap out the output shafts. I would think the 5 speed would be similar, since they both use the same T cases, but we will wait for the experts to reply and confirm

Yep. Just what 410fortune said......You have to change the output shaft tomate to the transfercase

How difficult of a job would that be? (changing the output shaft)
