hey everyone im new to the site and hope this i poted in the right area, if not sorry..... i recently bought a 2000 awd xlt right after buying it i replaced the front wheel hub, outter tie rods, upper and lower ball joints both sides, new shocks, and sway bar links. changed the oil pressure sensor, did oil change put new plug wires and battery in and the truck is running great...except... when im going up a hill and the truck seems to want to down shift, and when it does, the engine feels like it is bogging out, or the trans is slipping... it give a weird shake to the truck. when it happens its usually around 1 - 1.5 rpm when taking off and stopping it doesnt give me any trouble, olny when crusing down the road and starting to accelerate slightly, (usually when needing to go up a hill is when i notice it the most)

any ideas?
thanks -Ross-

I'm also experiencing a slight shudder at around 1500rpms. It doesn't seem to matter if I'm under load or not. I'm suspecting the torque converter, but there are no noises... I just kind of have a feeling. In the last 6 months, I've replaced the camshaft synchronizer, spark plugs, u-joints, and a few of the suspension components. I don't cut corners either. All parts have been Motorcraft with the exception of the u-joints. In fact, I have a new set of Motorcraft spark plug wires ready to be installed, but I haven't yet found the time to get it done.

I just went through this with Matt's mounty. It felt like a shudder or miss. I did everything but couldn't figure it out---then the rear u joint started squealing.

After replacing the joint the shudder went away.

See if your u joint is "hanging up" in any direction by taking the drive shaft off the rear diff, and flexing the joint(S) in all directions

The drive shaft will slide out of the transmission tail housing and a bit of fluid might drain out so have a pan handy

I hope, for the original poster's sake, that you're right Jon, but I just replaced my u-joints not more than 2 months ago. The shudder was present before and its exactly the same now.

im kinda hoping its the u joints as well.... basic and simple fix... ill be sure to check them out tomorrow when i get out of work. other then that im good friends witha mechanic just down the street from my job so i mgiht have him check it out while im at work to save me sometime.. thanks for the input guys

i went and talked to my mechanic today after work... he said it sounds like the torque converter... so i set up an appointment to have a transmission place look at it tomorrow.... ill be sure to post again with results.

ok so I tried using shutter stop or shutter fix, cant remember the name of it, but it was supposed to take the slip out of the torque converter and add friction to the fluid and take the shutter out of the converter... either way it didn't help me out at all... actually it feels like the converter is getting worse by the day. I'm not new to working on vehicles, and getting my hands dirty, but I am new to the transmission part. I plan on buying a new torque converter and installing it my self, which i don't think ill have a problem with. what i do need to know though is... what transmission do i have? the truck is a 2000 xlt awd 5.0 v8. i just want to make sure when i order the converter it is for the right transmission, because i wouldn't know what to tell the place I'm buying it from if they asked. and I'm sure they will. thanks in advance to anyone that can help me out.... and any advice on changing the converter would be very much appreciated as well. thanks again. -Ross-

As with all 5.0 equipped Explorers, you have the 4R70W. Napa has a listing for the correct torque converter on their ProLink website, but I haven't checked the non-business website.

A tip right off the top of my head would be to make sure you disconnect your battery. The transmission fluid lines are really close to the starter, so it would be really easy to give yourself a nice jolt.
