trans is gone

I'm wondering if someone can help me out here. I'm driving a 1993 Ford Explorer 4dr with an A4LD trans and 3.08 gearing, but it has only three forward gears(im thinking 1,2,3) and no reverse. i was racing my wife in our '98 Ford Contour, needless to say I lost, and I got up to 90 but I was 1000 rpms from redlining. Could this be repaired, and would it be better to rebuild it or buy another one? Thanks

CHECK the fluid level and smell first.

When I first got the truck i changed the fluid and filter and checked the reverse server, the level was fine and there was no smell. The previous owner took it out of town one day and from what she said, the trans overheated. the reverse server looked fine, as well as the rings and seals. The truck is a 2wd, might i add.
