I may undertake a personal project this winter dealing with our transmissions during off road use.

Anyways, I need to get an idea of the rate at which the transmissoin is pumping fluid -- for example, at the lines that goes from the transmission to the transmission cooler.

So does anyone have a figure say during idle or at a certain RPM (gpm or lpm) ?

sorry to jack the thread, but how much tranny fluid should my 98 v8 explorer have?

I don't know if I'm on the right track here,
A friend with a 70 1/2 camaro ( I know) , had a power steering pump leak. Did some research and discoveres that some guys are running the ATF lines to the steering box, then cooler, and eliminating a power steering pump.

Isn't this harmful to the front pump?

sorry if this is hijacking?

Maybe, but its just a Chevy, so there is no great loss. :p ;)

Actually, I would wonder if the steering force might be kinda erratic with that setup. I don't know how constant the pressure is in the trans cooler lines.

In my factory manual, there is a transmission cooler flow test. To perform the test, you disconnect the cooler return line from the transmission and reroute it to fill a funnel in the fluid filler (dipstick) tube. According to this test, you should get a flow rate of 1 liter (1.05 qt) every 30 seconds.
There we have it - thanks! I'll assume this is at idle :D Thanks again!!

I guess that would work for emergency purposes but I don't think the transmission's pump provides enough pressure to fully support the requirements of the steering box.

Yeah, we sometimes do a flow check before we install a new transmission. We test out of the cooler to make sure it isn't stopped up

Sonnax corp actually makes a flow tester called Sonnaflow, to check out adequacy of flow. Not sure if their test data is readuly available anywhere though.
