I drive a 91' auto with 171,000 with an AL4D (4 wheel drive).
I have 3 problems (but they all may be the same):
1) About 2 months after installing a used transmission my transmission won't shift or something. It will shift late, be at 3000 rpms at 45mph and around 5000rpms at 70. After a while it will suddenly go down to about 3500 rpms at 70mph but I notice no difference in engine sound/power, etc.
2) I live in Utah and lately it's been consistently down in the single digits at night. I have to let my X warm up for about 20 minutes and it still won't go into gear unless I rev the engine up and even then it's hit and miss. This and the following problem started about 5 months after changing the tranny.
3) It will "go out of gear" while driving and I'll have to pull over and put it in park and then in every gear and then back to drive and rev up again until it "catches" I know doing this couldn't be good for the transmission but you do what you gotta do to try to get to work. Once I have driven for a few minutes it won't have any more problems. The other transmission that I took out never did this.
I have read to try and clean the governor but wasn't sure if that would fix this and that some of the servo seals may be bad. Another clue is that when I put this transmission in I put new motor gears in and didn't have it standing up (vertical) when I removed the bell housing. The transmission guy that put the new pump gears on the bell housing for me said that I should have tightened up some bands before removing the bell housing but that it may not have done any damage.
Any input in helping me solve this problem would be greatly appreciated. BTW I still have the other transmission. It had broken gears. I could just put new gears in that one and swap them out but I'd rather not...I also didn't have the tranny vertical nor did I tighten up any bands when I took the bell housing off of that one either.
