hey can you replace the transmission mount without having to drop the t-case? looks like the cross member can be dropped separately too. thoughts?

It wouldn't surprise me if you could change it with the crossmember installed. Unbolt from the crossmember, raise the trans up to clear the mount and unbolt the mount. With the exhaust hanger, that might be a real ***** though.

There should be sufficient clearance if you raise the transmission with a jack. You might want to use a block of wood or a cushioned rubber saddle on the jack to prevent the metal from digging into the pan.

Old thread but is it safe to lift the transmission by the pan, using a jack? Seems like a bad idea since it’s bolted to the engine. But I’ve seen people with rangers do it, so it looks safe. Other than the four bolts holding the mount to the transmission and the mount to the crossmember, is there anything else that should be disconnected before jacking up on the transmission pan?

I wouldn't jack up on the trans pan, that will almost surely dent it. It may support the weight to hold it, but I wouldn't risk that either. You don't need to push it up much, and it won't go up much at all, maybe at most an inch. Put something on your jack and push up on the transmission anywhere else, even the front of the drive shaft if you don't push up against the floor pan.

I’m going to get a 4x4 block of wood and I’ll try somewhere else bedsides the pan. The guy in this video uses the pan as do most other videos I’ve seen where the crossmember isn’t removed. Hopefully my jack can go high enough to lift without using the pan.

Using a large enough object like a big 2x10" chunk of wood, would be okay to lift on the pan. I was imagining the basic floor jack pad, first thought, so a big enough piece of wood can do well. Just don't expect the trans to go up far, the floorboard is fairly close above it. I think the cross member should be easy to drop given how short it is, and how easy the bolts are to reach.

Can you remove the center portion of the crossmember without messing with the torsion bars? That was my first idea until I remembered that the torsion bars attach to it. I’m fine with removing the crossmember as long as the truck doesn’t fall on me

The torsion bars mount against the frame, it's a short section welded to the inner part of the frame. The cross member bolts to those on each side with two bolts. The member is an important piece that has to be there, but you can drop it for maintenance etc. Here's the best picture I have of mine when I rebuilt the front suspension, new T-bars etc.
