Transmission problems 1997 4r55e

Ok Dogfriend and others, I had the overdrive light working now. It turns out to be a grounding wiring in the shifter lever. So I had to replace them and tested it and it all is working properly. If some of you had this problem.. you can check for that wiring switch is grounding.

Cheers

I did the brown wire mod, actually just cut and taped up the brown wire under the seat. Then went under the truck and and manually shifted the motor back to the 2wd position. I left the connector under the truck unplugged. The overdrive light now flashes, so I think I'll check the ground wire to the shift lever next. I haven't driven it much more than 10 or 15 miles, but it seemed to do okay in 2wd on the few trips I've made. Much better than the few feet I was getting out of it before doing this.

I have been reading about your problem and all of the replys. I have been hearing the same grinding noise on my 97 Explorer 4.0 SOHC with 4r55e. All of the symptoms are exactly the same including the grinding after losing the engine braking (decel). Yesterday it took a dump and I am stuck. Can you confirm after all you have done to your Explorer....was the transfer case bad after all?

Thanks,
Bob

Bob,

I unhooked the plug on the transfer case motor, and put 12v to one of the wires and turned the motor. Got it to where it'd drive home. I've been adventurous and probably put 250 miles on it since then. With gas so high, its just been sitting since I have other cars to drive.... but I do need to get it fixed. Do a search about the pinouts on the motor. If you don't have any luck, I can see if I can find the printout I had. It'll atleast get you home without towing.

Properdees, sounds like the TOD clutch and/or shift fork in the T/F case are shot.
