transmission swapping

greetings, just wondering can I swap my 1996 4 dr ford explorer xlt automatic transmission with a 1998 2 dr exolorer transmission

nope. the 96 is a 4r55e, the 98 is a 5r55e (ones a 4 speed, the other is a 5 speed). that and there is other internal differences as well

It will bolt up but you wont have the overdrive

Keep looking through the Fourm. I had thought of the same swap. As the over drive is electronic, and if I am recalling what I had read it correctly, it will act as a 4 speed. The 96 used two different transmissions, the early 96 4r44E was prone to problems and is the same as the 95 but the late 96 was different and, if I recall correctly, the same as the 97 and up second gen Explorer. It can get confusing but there is info out there and it is also about what you are up to doing. Good Luck
