Thanks for all the replies I've gotten that I posted about towing.

I have a 01 Explorer Sport Trac V6 4.0 4x4.

I'm looking for advice on what type/brand Transmission gauge to buy?
Mech or Ele?

Reason is to watch the temp in the transmission while towing. I already have a transmission x air cooler. Its was on the truck 9" long by about 5 "h.

I thinking of putting the sender unite into the side of the oil pan of the trans.

Any suggestions are welcome

Has anyone done this with there sport trac?

thanks

Get a Scangage2 and plug it into the OBDII socket.
Let's you monitor 4 things at the same time, and switch to dozens of other gages at any time. I'm always watching: Trans temp, gear ratio, engine load, and convertor input/output ratio

At any time, I can switch to engine temp, mpg, AF ratio, and all sorts of other things I rarely use.

No tapping, no leaks, and so much more information.

Thanks for your reply.
I was also thinking of getting one of these too.
I still would like a back up that isn't ele. A mechanical trans temp gauge should give me a peace of mind. Now that your saying a leak could happen I will keep this on my list to check and check again.

Bombo, some things to consider:

If you put a sender in the pan, you could also use this location to drain the pan for fluid changes.
Brazing/welding the adapter to the pan is best, fluid will leak/weep by any sealants.
Wherever you locate the gauge, remember that is you ever have to pull the gauge out for any reason, then the sender will also have to be removed from the pan if its a mechanical unit. A real PITA. For this reason I replaced the mech to elec.

I have the scangauge in my 06. Reads from the ECM so dead nuts accurate and realtime.

I think the scangauge will be more accurate than an aftermarket gauge.

At one time I had both. As stated before it is dead on accurate.
Plug in and done. You will also be able to use it to read and clear trouble codes.

You will need to go to the website for adding in the trans temp function code, but it is very simple.
