So I have a 95 xlt 4x4 with the 4.0l and I had recently replaced the transmission and transfer case from a 95 that was in an accident. All worked well up until I was leaving work and shifted into drive and it would not shift or engage so I kept rehung the engine and nothing so it threw it in gear 1 and revved it up to 3k and it shifted into gear and then I threw it into drive and it shifted gears like if it was brand new im not sure what to replace im thinking the range and speed sensor and the O/D light has been blinking since I installed it. Any suggestions or anyone with my issue please help im not sure weather to junk it or keep fixing it just love the darn truck.

does it do it again? if it engages in 1 and if you shift it to 2, does thst work? that usually indicates a VB issue. and imo i wouldnt rev it to 3k then let it drop into gear, that aint good for the trans and sends a huge shock through the drivetrain, a great way to earn yourself a rebuild imo. can you read the code for the od light? odd though that it worked fine in D, iits usually it doesnt work in D fully, and 12 works, so i wonder about this one if it is indeed a vb issue, or just slow to build pressure

Flashing od light means you are in limp mode and there is a problem with the transmission

You need to retrieve the transmission trouble code(s) and go from there

Assuming you have already confirmed correct fluid level?

I have checked the fluid and it’s topped up haven’t used it in a few months since I don’t wanna ruin the trans more, I’ve also gotten me a Ford obd1 scanner and I’ll be getting the code soon when I can have a chance

It does move on 2 and drive like normal and I’ve let it sit in drive for around 20-30ish minutes to build pressure yet nothin, valve body is the next route but I also just wanna say to hell with it and throw a manual in it and just quit the automatic

manual swaps have been done, but they are rather complicated imo
