TT!!!!! vs torsion key

Ok I’ve been reading all I can find about torsion twists and keys
Check me if I’m wrong but from what I can tell
It seems the difference between the twist and the key is
The twist actually puts more preload on the torsion bar to get the lift
That means its makes for a rougher ride because its like putting a stronger spring in

The key changes the position of the torsion bar in the adjusting key
So you can get 2” of lift without tightening the torsion bar
Giving you 2” of lift without changing the stiffness of the ride as much

Ok I want to squeeze a little more height out of my X with minimal monetary out put. I was wondering if I got a set of torsion keys AND a set of V8 4X4 torsion bars could I clear 33's with out a BL?

Mmk so if you buy the keys, could you do the TT on top of that for maybe a 5in lift for the front?? I'm 2wd btw. Cause if I can do that, then I'm just gonna do the SOA conversion in the rear for about 5in all the way around. Thanks.

I believe if you do it too much it could put too much pressure on the torsion bar and break it. I was going to lift my Mounty at one point and was reading up on it.

Just remember turning up the bolts is basically increasing the spring rate of the t-bars, and it'll get stiffer the higher you go. Not to mention you will end up bottoming out often if you get too high.

For 2wd just get a lift spindle for the front. That and a 2" TT will get you 5.5" in the front. I wouldnt advise cranking your bars that much, you will lose all downtravel and majorly stress the bars, and you lower ball joints.

I was thinking about goin with the spindle lift up front but there too damn expensive right now lol I've been everywhere lookin for a used pair and no luck.

type 1 bars are the hardest with lift keys could I get a bit mor lift with minimal loss or wheel travel?

They arent expensive when you take into account the wear and tear on your vehicle from over cranking the bars. Ive seen them for 399$ shipped.

Keep in mind that as you lift the front end, you lose down travel in the suspension.

Finally, once and for all, torsion keys accomplish the EXACT SAME THING as a simple torsion twist. They increase the preload on the torsion bars, thereby raising the front end of the truck. It makes zero difference whether you replace the keys or just crank the OEM keys, the net result is the same.

Going more than 2" in either a 4x4 or a 2wd is not good for the suspension. First, you've sacraficed 2" of down-travel, and second, it changes the load angles on the ball joints and tie rods, which will accelerate wear there too. A spindle lift for a 2wd will be much more gentle on the front end steering and suspension components.

Simple enough?

Yes I have already updated my sig to note that thanks.

I loved this post, however nobody responded to it.

My 1999 XLT 4X4 has the TT, and shackles in the back. When I go over a speed bump, I can certainly feel the stiffness from the front, while I feel nice smoothness from the back. When I am up to speeds of 35mph or so, and take a bumpy turn (railroad tracks for example), I can feel the stiff suspension, and I receive quite a bit of undesirable wheel skip. From what I have read, the TT is making the front suspension stiffer.

So, my question is.... If I was to lower my front end to stock height again, and use 2" Tkeys instead, would I still receive my 2" lift upfront and have my desired stock suspension feel up front? Or will the Tkeys still give me as much of a stiff suspension feel?

Thank you in advance for your help.

Your still preloading the bars by putting the keys in there making the ride the same as having the torsion bars cranked thus defeating your purpose completely. If you read on past the post you quoted you will see that they are essentially doing the same thing.

That is a shame.
Thank you very much for your reply.

help!!! where are the torsion keys on 02 explorer and what do i need todo to lift it???

Thanks Joe. This is exactly why I haven't done it. I have an older car. It's a 97. Like I need to make more problems for myself? Set something up to break, so that I'll have to repair it later? Do you think I can still easily find new suspension parts for a '97? It was hard enough just trying to find simple hoses.

Alot of people on here have done the TT yes it could accelerate wear but buy good parts like MOOG when it comes to chassis and suspension parts, and parts like those are still readily available for your truck, its not like its 20 yrs old.

torsion keys

dose anyone know where i can find my torsion keys on my 02 xlt????:exporange

If you have an XLT (4 door), you've got coils up front, so there aren't any torsion bars to worry about.

DO NOT EXCEED A 2INCH TT.. i have a 1997 explorer im 18 and i heard u could do that and i put them all the way up.. and my cvs up lower and most of my bushings got trashed. and your sway bar drops to far and creaks and cracks in a flex and the suspensions like a rock my truck bounced everywhere.. i have flat leaf springs and a effed up front end.. i advise you listen to experts lol..
