Having previously conducted experiments on the effect of vehicle speed on IAT ( http://www.explorerforum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=143720&page=1&pp=20 )
I decided to evaluate under hood temperature at various speeds, during in town driving, stopped in Park ( with the hood closed and with it open ).

For the under hood temperature measurements, I used a Radio Shack Wireless Indoor/Outdoor Thermometer with Remote Sensor ( http://www.radioshack.com/product.a...10_005_001_000&product_id=63-1087&site=search ).

The test parameters were as follows: various truck speeds from 20 to 70 MPH, determined by GPS ( Dead Link Removed ), ambient temperature determined by the vehicle’s outside temperature display, IAT from PCM as reported to OBD II scanner ( http://www.autoxray.com/default.htm ).

The truck was driven for 10 minutes at each speed on cruise control and then the under hood temperature was noted and recorded.

For all of the trials, the Black Magic Extreme 180 electric fan ( Dead Link Removed ) was on continuously via manual control.

Prior to any of the tests, the engine was warmed up and the coolant temperature was 194 F ( OBD II scanner determined [ http://www.autoxray.com/default.htm ] ).

Since its use will be a temporary, permanent mounting was not needed. Various under hood locations were tried and the readings were basically the same.

Speed ambient temperatureUnder hood temperature IAT

20 91 104 96
30 91 104 95
40 91 102 94
50 91 100 93
60 91 99 93
70 92 98 91

Traffic 93 124 132
Driving

Idle 92 157 187
Hood closed

Idle 93 134 153
Hood open

It appears that under hood temperature is directly related to air flow, either by vehicle speed or by an open hood. The difference in under hood temperature and IAT at 70 MPH is only 7 F, and the under hood temperature is only 6 F warmer than ambient.

Cool. Like I said before I want your gadgets :)

One of these days I will run out of major projects and get to fool around with this stuff.

So to me this says dropping underhood temps will in fact create a cooler intake charge, therfore in theory making more power?

I have never run out of major projects; painting the house, rebuilding two Chevy 350's for the boat, refurbishing the cabin of the boat, repairing my hot tub, taking care of the landscape, and so on .... I lust like to work on little Explorer projects too..

I look at this temperature project not to make power, but to increase efficiency to make mileage ( and increased efficiency usually increases power as a side benefit.

I use that indoor outdoor thermomitor in my own house. It works well

With the engine at a warmer temp, you will get better mileage than with it colder. Next time you watch a race look at some of the front ends. You'll notice they block the passage to the radiator in order to keep the engine warmer and save fuel.

Actually the reason the NASCAR cars keep a small opening and even tape most of it closed during qualifying is for aerodynamic reasons.

I have seen hot dog wrappers send these cars to the pits due to overheating.

Its a fine balance in grill opening size and cooling vs.. speed and handling.

Wasn't it the joker in the batman movie that said: "Where does he get those wonderful toys?" something like that anyway. LOL

yes cooler air charge = more power but not better mileage. This is why the cars from the factory run hot, well hot to me.

I'm still waiting for someone here to do this, Hood Louvers, (preferably on a 1st-gen) so I can see what it would look like on an Explorer. I'm thinking that the recessed louvers Saleen uses on the 2005 Saleen Mustang might look pretty good.

Al? Do I see you doing hood (or even fender) louvers soon? ;)

Yes, I've seen them pit due to trash, especially at Pocono. I know they do that in qualifying, but they also race like that to keep the temp and mileage up.

Yes, I will eventually do either hood or fender louvers.

Sweet! This was interesting, you have gotta love all those tools and gadgets. ;)

Thats why the new 07 SVT sporttracs will come with functional front air intakes and side louvers (course they make a tad more H.P. 390) gotta get the heat out:)

Monmix already did some recessed scoops. Check out http://www.explorerforum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=136802

Aldive gets my vote as one of the guiding lights on this site ! Thanks guy !

So when you do my side markers, you wanna put louvers in too?

When I tested my 1st gen I got under hood air temps up over 140 degF in traffic on an 83 degF day.

For those of you interested, I believe Aldive has discussed hood louvers in the past. There is an old thread about them somewhere.
