I have had my current Explorer since 2006 and have always liked it. With things needing repair now, and after riding in some newer SUV's lately, I surely do the see benefit from today's technology. My 1997 doesn't nearly compare to a 2010 Explorer.
However, how much of a difference can I expect from at least a 2002 - 2005 model? In my own opinion, it's a nicer design and it also has IRS so it probably won't feel like you're riding a shopping cart. What other benefits could I expect if I upgraded my current model?
