Vehicle in question is a 1998 Explorer Sport with the 4.0 SOHC engine. All I was finding earlier were youtube videos and OHV engines.
Anyway, my little truck here idles rough and has throw PO171 and 174. I traced every vacuum line I could find looking for damage or leaks, all to no avail. However, if I rap on the intake manifold itself, I can hear a brief but powerful hiss that I can't pinpoint. I *think* the intake gaskets are leaking, so I looked up the procedure to replace them in the Haynes book.
Haynes says you gotta pull the valve covers off to remove the lower intake, but that doesn't make any sense unless I'm missing something. Are there any write ups (not Youtube videos) on how to get the lower intake off?
Working slow and deliberately, how long should I expect this to take?
