the white one...
I want to add a temp guage for my transmission fluid. I have had an incident jammin up Vail Pass and nearly toasting the tranny because it got so hot the fluid boiled out the vent tube.
Can I use an aftermarket (Auto Meter) water temp guage for this application? Would mechanical or electrical both work as well?
My plan is to fit it in-line on the tranny cooler feed line.
Any input would be appreciated...

Hey I'm pretty sure that autometer makes a transmission temperature guage, Here it is:

The transmission guage is just about right in the middle of that page. You can also go to http://www.autometer.com and look for some different ones.

wabbit,

Great idea about the temp gauge. Let us know how it works out. If you're concerned about overheating the tranny, you may want to consider a synthetic ATF, like AMSOIL. Reduce operating temps 20 to 50 degrees F and reduce bearing temps 50 to 70 degrees F. Plus it will last up to 3 times longer than conventional ATF.

will a water temp guage work?

I want to try using a water temp guage because the trans temp guage does not come in the 1.5" mini series. I would think the electrical would work the same on both water and trans fluid. The mechanical may not work right due to the viscosity of the fluid and surface tension in the capillary tube. Gee, I think I just answered my own question...
But, I would still like to hear from someone who has done this...

The water temp guage will proably not read high enough for use as a trans temp guage. If I remember right the auto tranny can reach as high as 250+deg. Your best bet would be to contact Auto Meter through their web sight or customre service department and ask them directly if their water temp guage will work for your application.
