A while back when fuel costs were through the roof, I did some experimentation consisting making some small modifications to my custom gas mileage 89 octane tune to allow the use of 87 octane fuel.

Well after 2 months of testing, the mods were successful.

With 89 fuel costing $0.27 more than 87, I am saving over $5.00 per tank without giving up all the benefits and performance of the custom 89 tune.

out of interest, we use 95 octane normally here, if I start using 87 octane will I need to do any modifications to my explorer?

thanks

Then why are you using 95 octane fuel?

Yes, you can and should be using 87.

Good luck .....

I'm in England... we use 95 normally and 97 is our high octane stuff..

but I'm planning on taking my Explorer with me when I emigrate and was wondering if I'd need to alter anything

Oh man! I was just about to ask that: Do you have a readily available choice of octanes? Are the vehicles modified by Ford to run on 95?

I have no idea tbh...

UK petrol is always 95 octane and that's the normal stuff, 97 is the stuff tuned cars run on...

I don't wanna be fiddling with octane booster everyday

What about 'jet nitro' fuel? This gas station sells this super-duper high-octane gas (Ostensibly for racing, I guess). Its expensive. Can I do like 1/2 and 1/2?

if you do this you run the risk of fouling out the spark plugs. also race fuel is way to high of an octane. it will burn much hotter than needed and possibly cause piston rings to melt and oil consumption will become will rise as well. I had to rebuild a 2001 Sport track for this simple fact.
