I have been exploring the idea of swapping a manual trans into my 97 v8 mountaineer. I have 155,000 miles on the stock 4r70w trans. it still works great, but it's getting the distinctive whine under acceleration, and I really want a manual anyways.

I have a friend who's a mechanic that would be helping me with this undertaking.

does anyone have any info as to which tranny would work with the 5.0 v8
what modifications are required to make it work

basically, anyting and everything that you may know about putting a manual tranny behind the 302.

sounds like fun . what u might need is peddle assy. fron a 95-96 5 speed x u can find a lot in the sports. and if u want 2x4 u might be able to use a t5 like the ones out of a mustang. and if the tail shaft comes off u might be able to bolt a t case to it. i dont know what to use i havnt seen this one yet.good luck keep us posted

I'm thinking the ECM from the pick up might work out just fine too. Can't use anything like a Mustang ECM...no 5.0 OBDII Mustangs. I wouldn't trust a T5 as far as I could throw it. They barely held up in a Mustang. Even World Class boxes. Put them behind something this heavy with any power at all and you're done. If you are 4WD, you will about be stuck with a pick up trans. If 2WD, you may be able to use something like a T56. If you can get a wide ratio T56, that would make one very, very nice swap. See McLeod for shifter applications. They have a "modular" shifter application to help put the shifter in the right location for these kinds of swaps. They also would more than likely have a bell housing that would put this all together for you...including a hydraulic throw out bearing if you want to go that way.

you will have to tune your PCM to remove the auto transmission functions, otherwise it wont run well at all

teh explorer PCM has DIS ignition and of course is OBD_II, no other 5.0L vehicles had this setup, so putting a 5 speed behind your engine requires:

a. computer tune
b. install a distributor and go back to a OBD-I setup = not emissions legal

teh explorer PCM has DIS ignition

Hmmm...I forgot about that. No DIS on the pick up then? I know they had OBDII 5.0's in the pick ups...my son had a 96. But I didn't realize only the explorer was DIS...

Time to talk to James and see what's out there.

I have heard the 96 F-150 and Bronco was avail with the 5.0L and a 5 speed trans, I have never seen one
I do not know if they had DIS or not

1996 Ford Bronco was DIS AND available with a 5 Spd. I've never heard of the F-150 being available like that.

96 F-150 should be the same as the Bronco???

All 94-96 FSB's I have seen are automatic

They were available w/ the M5OD trans....there was one on eBay a few days ago..just for confirmation...
