I have a 97 xl 4.0 OHV. How many vapor canisters are there? I look and there appears to be 2 of them side by side. There is also a solenoid valve in front of the inboard one, and I do not know what it is. I just chanhed the Vapor Management Valve and was poking around to see and discovered that there appears to be 2 vapor canisters.

Please help.

On this truck they are on a bracket under the spare tire. but I do not know which one is it. I am stumped.

You two are talking about completely different components in completely different systems.

lorenambrose is talking about the charcoal canisters used for the evap emissions, located above the spare tire.

CCW6212R is talking about the vacuum canister in the engine compartment. It's used to maintain vacuum for vacuum operated equipment.

I don't know what that solenoid valve is, or even if it is a solenoid valve.

There should be a fuel tank pressure sensor in the system somewhere, that may be what it is.

Sorry I can't be more help, but I haven't had any problems with this system on my truck so I haven't studied it very closely. If I have time tomorrow, I'll look around and see if I have any information that may be of use to you.

The pressure sensor is on the fuel tank
the vent cannister is near the rear tire
the purge solenoid valve is under the battery tray.

The second "vapor cannister" you see is not a vapor cannister. It is the vacuum reserve bottle, or, globe, located in the front passenger wheel well.
I think the valve at the cannister is an anti siphon vapor valve.

No actually both of these are mounted right next to each other under the spare tire. I know one of them is the vapor canister but they look almost alike. I have seen the reserve vac globe exactly where you said, in the front passenger wheel well.

I don't know your vehicle well at all but feel like mentioning that I have come across Fords in the past which use two evap vapor canisters. They do the same thing and are connected via hoses.
