well, my driveshaft was, in fact, another culprit.
I found this on ebay:
a "heavy duty" and serviceable front driveshaft.
Yup, the correct 6-bolt flange.
comparing the old pos cv and new shaft.
flanges are the same.
the new shaft, with shorter bolts.
I paid around $330 or so, with the shipping (not too bad for shipping to Alaska).
